The Strategy Group is a fast paced, growing division of our clients M&A Transactions and Restructuring practice. The practice has approximately 100 people in the UK, with a broader global presence in total of 350. The Strategy group is organised along sector lines to allow for tailored advice to clients based on deep industry knowledge.

The Strategy group provides strategic advice to companies and public sector bodies pre, during and post deal or organisational transformation. Our objective is to provide practical and useful recommendations that can be delivered by the client in a cost effective manner. Work ranges from traditional commercial due diligence assignments to large strategic engagements.


The Strategy Group is looking for Associates/Managers to join its highly successful and expanding public sector practice and to help contribute to its future success. We deliver a broad range of engagements which vary in scope. They are often long-term, high profile projects where we work collaboratively with senior Civil Servants or management at Central Government Departments and Government-owned businesses. We also have a number of private sector engagements where we work with companies that operate within highly regulated environments and require close cooperation with Government to be successful.

Role responsibilities
• Manage discrete engagements and teams to address complex market, strategic, organisational, regulatory/ policy and ownership issues across different Government sectors. We routinely work in Defence, Education, Transportation, Energy and Employment/ Skills.
• Design and execute financial analyses to support development of strategic insights (including consideration of market development, organisational options and responses, capacity/ capability-building requirements etc.)
• Conceive and undertake primary and secondary research to help clients assess the impact of the above on their organisations, and where relevant the implications for sponsoring Government departments.
• Develop analysis to support advice on appropriate operating models and ownership structures for Government-owned businesses, including support for development of innovative approaches to private sector involvement in service delivery.
• Facilitate of Board level interventions to assist with articulating, shaping and developing strategies and approaches to strategic company issues.
• Develop business cases and business plans in support of strategic initiatives.
• Lead project and large work-streams on engagements and take responsibility for small teams when required.
• Assist project leads to manage the delivery and presentation of client deliverables.
• Work collaboratively with client staff and management often working in joint teams in the development of and delivery of recommendations. Present findings to senior client management.
• Be involved in business development activity, showing initiative in building relationships with clients during engagements and while at client site, maintain an up to date understanding of trends in the Public Sector and helping to develop KPMG product offering.
• Contribute to wider practice development activities e.g. recruitment, training and knowledge management.

The Person
To succeed in this demanding role you will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

• Previous experience in managing Strategy or Transformation assignments, commercial due diligence, or market assessment underpinned by strong technical knowledge of strategic analytical tools.
• Intellectual mobility, inquisitiveness and an ability to work independently; be comfortable developing answers and solutions often when the client requirement remains unclear, or changes.
• Goal driven - focused on helping the client to understand issues and resolve key questions; ability to drive through to an outcome and to gain stakeholder support in circumstances of complexity and ambiguity.
• Strong academic background (ideally ACA or MBA) with strategy, transactions or policy experience gained in either corporate roles, public sector organisations or strategic consultancy.
• A broad knowledge of the Public Sector, its structures and principal policy areas as these relate to certain sectors, specific experience of working with arms-length Government bodies (Trading Funds, NDPBs, Government Corporations would be preferable) and/or specific sector knowledge (e.g. Defence, Energy etc)
• Strong interviewing skills and experience of designing and managing primary market and competitive research.
• Strong numerical, analytical and strategic thinking skills - able to demonstrate how one supports the other - and sound commercial acumen.
• A pragmatic and logical approach to analysis and problem solving.
• Personal drive to deliver results within tight deadlines.
• Ability to assess technical information to distill they key strategic insights and convey these succinctly, clearly and confidently orally and in written form.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Flexibility to adapt to a variety of different engagement types, working hours and work environments and locations.
